Bali – Temples, Turtles, Monkey Raids and Bali Belly
After a not so smooth landing we made it to Bali.
Our first stop was Kuta, around a 5 minute drive from the airport.
The town itself is the Australian equivalent of the British going to Spain (lots of drinking, beer bellies and groups of people that sunbathe from sunrise to sunset).
We spent most of our time in Kuta walking round the shops, going to the beach and having massages. After a few days we headed across to Sanur, about 40 minutes away.
Sanur has beautiful beaches and our hotel had a traditional Balinese dancing show, which is quite similar to every other South East Asian dancing.
We went on a cycling tour to the nearby Turtle Island. We got to feed the green turtles that had been rescued from fishing and got to see all the hatchlings that were part of the breeding program. Afterwards, we cycled to a research centre where we got to hold baby turtles. They are surprisingly strong for their size.
Our next destination was Ubud, a quiet town in the mountains which was beautiful. We treated ourselves to a nice hotel, which was lucky as we both had a severe case of Bali belly, so we ended up spending a lot of time in the room.
Our friends from our Africa trip were staying nearby so we met up with them a few times, although being ill, we weren’t very good company.
On our last day in Ubud, we felt well enough to leave the room and we ventured to the Monkey Forest Temple. We got to feed the Macaque monkeys, and watched them play around and fighting.
A monkey decided he wanted all the bananas, and so Rob got raided… now that was funny.
After a few days in Ubud, we went back to Kuta. We showed our friends round the town and went to an Irish pub which even had the unmistakeable smell of a British pub.
Two weeks passed quite quickly and we left Bali for Darwin Australia
Our flight was late at night and it took us ages to get through all the different security stations having our bags searched and being searched more than I care to remember.
So, on to Australia and every backpackers required destination. Here’s hoping it lives up to our expectations.
