Un-Cool Trip to Miami – The Ass End of America

Our last night in Lima was really noisy all night so we didn’t sleep and had to be up at 3 am to go to the airport. The queue for check in was enormous and our plane had been delayed.  It was all chaos and lots of redirecting but eventually we made it just in time. We had to connect in Columbia which meant we had to go through lots of security.

Finally we made it to Miami, which lived up to its nightmare reputation.

The queue to get through border control was HUGE, it took nearly 3 hours to get to the front and when we did make it, we got nothing but attitude from the young girl who was on a power trip.

Kirstie got through fairly quick as she has been to the USA before, so it was the standard finger prints, pictures and 10 million questions. Rob on the other hand took a bit longer to get through, especially as 2 French girls kept pushing in as they couldn’t fill in their form correctly.  We were made to feel like criminals, a horrible experience.

Finally our bags were scanned and then we were out into Miami.

Miami Pickup Trucks We then tried to get the shuttle to our hotel.  It took nearly 2 hours to turn up; we flagged the driver, he saw us, and then kept driving.  We were very angry by now so we ended up getting a taxi.  Our room at the hotel was really nice and good old Denny’s cheered us up and filled our bellies.

We spent our 2nd  day in Miami doing laundry, walking to the local shops and having a restful day – we needed it!

On the 3rd day we were supposed to fly to San Francisco. We stayed in the room until check out, had lunch and then went for a walk (our flight wasn’t until 7pm).  We went to a Ford dealership and looked at the enormous pickup trucks.  We found a bike shop and a Chinese furniture shop so we wasted some time in there, making the most of the air-con!

We came back to the hotel for a while then got taken to the airport in the pouring rain.  The rain and storm was so terrible that our flight had been cancelled.  Once again we queued for ages at a help desk and found out that our flight had been re-booked for the following morning and we had been put up in the Sofitel with our food paid for so it worked out ok in the end.

The Sofitel hotel was beautiful and the room was really nice.  It was amazing watching the lighting play over the Miami panorama, but what a nightmare of a place to visit.

Forget the CSI Miami intro’s and all the Miami beach bullshit and avoid this place. Miami is one place you do not want to be.
